Inv. 1665-1666 (= MP3 356.11; LDAB 824). - Martin and Primavesi suppose that fragment a deals with a period of total separation of the elements, but I argue for another interpretation, according to which Empedocles meant that the elements will never rest until the Sphaerus has been formed (which corresponds to Eudemus of Rhodes' interpretation). Minor interpretations and supplements are also offered for the other fragments of the papyrus. Its evidence is inconclusive regarding the two interpretations of the cycle (two zoogonies vs. one zoogony). |
