Index 860
Titre Grace Stafford, Between the living and the dead: use, reuse, and imitation of painted portraits in Late Antiquity.
Publication JRA 35 (2022) pp. 683-712, figg.
Résumé Painted portraits on wood and cloth were common in the ancient world and prized as authentic and lifelike images. Affordable, portable, and desirable, they were an important form of representation, but rarely survive in the archaeological record outside Egypt. Approaches the study of painted portraiture in a way that does not necessitate the survival of the images themselves. Analyzes evidence for the use, reuse, and imitation of painted portraits in the catacombs of 4th-c. Rome by examining the remains of settings and attachments for portraits, the shadows left by them on walls, and portraits in other media which imitate panel paintings.

Index 214 860
Titre Joshua J. Thomas, The Ptolemy Painting? Alexander's "right-hand man" and the origins of the Alexander Mosaic.
Publication JRA 35 (2022) pp. 306-321, figg.
Résumé Revisits the origins of the Alexander Mosaic at Pompeii by focusing on the figure standing at Alexander's right hand. The starting point is Andreas Rumpf's suggestion that this "right-hand man" may be the patron of the original painting, who wished to advertise his own role in the represented battle. Ptolemy I is perhaps the strongest candidate on historical grounds, and that interesting connections can be drawn between the mosaic and the historian Kleitarchos, who worked at the Ptolemaic court. Circumstantial support for a Ptolemaic connection is supplied by other finds from the House of the Faun, three of which are briefly re-examined.
