Index 241 Égypte
Titre Daniel Arpagaus, "In Summe 27 Millionen Aruren". Die Größe Ägyptens gemäß dem Tempel von Edfu und dem Tebtunis-Onomastikon.
Publication Studien zur altägyptischen Kultur 50 (2021) pp. 27-43, figg.
Résumé A text on the inner enclosure wall of the Edfu temple provides, in concise form, a description of the dimensions of Egypt with both linear and surface measures. The total surface area of Egypt is given as 27 million aroura. A new interpretation is put forward that correlates the data from Edfu with a sketch of Egypt in the so called Tebtunis onomasticon. Taken together, the two sources allow for a smooth explanation of the land surface without having to resort to complicated numerological interpretations or by emendating certain measures.

Index 364 Magica
Titre Eleni Chronopoulou, Placebo is Magic or Magic is Placebo? The Greco-Roman Iatromagical Texts.
Publication Trends in Classics 13 (2021) pp. 21-43.
Résumé Many of the numerous magical recipes and spells from the Greco-Roman world aim to heal or protect the practitioner. The text, however, show great diversity and heterogeneity and many of them seem to be an elaborate amalgam of different religious influences, analogies, and interactions. This variety can, among other things, play into certain aspects of the placebo effect. Presents a systematic categorization of Greco-Roman amulets according to physical support, format, chronology, and purpose, which together with a study of their terminology may point towards different placebo effects. Examines their social context and describes the resources and the modus operandi of the magical healing, which will have further strengthened the effect of these amulets. Their reliance on cultural resources and tropes points especially towards conditioning and learned responses.

Titre Themis G. Dallas, A Note on the Orientation of Nubian Churches.
Publication Beiträge zur Sudanforschung 13 (2021) pp. 47-58.
Résumé Studies the orientation of 48 churches in Nubia by remote sensing (i.e. Google Earth) and conclude that, (a) 13 are oriented outside the solar sunrise arc; (b) 19 are oriented within 10°, either perpendicular or parallel, to the Nile flow; (c) 13 are oriented towards the equinox sunrise. In addition, we examine 92 churches from the literature, from which we rule out the suggestion that east was determined by sunrise during the construction period. Thus, the Nile is the major orientation factor for the Nubian churches. However, the equinoctial orientations in Old Dongola reinforce the arguments for Byzantine influences on the church architecture of the capital of Makuria.
